The San Mateo County Fair: A Peninsula Tradition Returns (May 30 – June 8)

The award-winning San Mateo County Fair is poised to return, offering eight days of continuous entertainment and novel experiences for individuals of all ages at the San Mateo County Event Center.1 This esteemed annual event serves as a foundational element of the summer season in the Bay Area, celebrating the profound cultural tapestry and inherent diversity of San Mateo County.1

The Fair is scheduled to operate from Friday, May 30, through Sunday, June 8, 2025. Daily hours are from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, with an adjusted opening time of 4:00 PM on May 30. It is important to note that the Fair will be closed to the public on Monday, June 2, and Tuesday, June 3.3

Asian Cultural Day is scheduled for Sunday, June 1.1 Thursday, June 5, is designated as Honoring Veterans & Senior Day, providing free admission for veterans, seniors aged 62 and above, and children 12 and under.3 Pacific Islands Day will be observed on Saturday, June 7, and culminating with Día De La Feria on Sunday, June 8.3 A Black History Museum is also featured daily.3

New attractions complement classic favorites, enhancing the overall visitor experience. Attendees can explore the Popnology exhibit, engage with an interactive milking cow named Mademoiselle Crème de la Crème, and enjoy thrilling rides, educational displays, art installations, agricultural showcases, and a wide selection of traditional and innovative fair treats.1 Daily programming also encompasses competitive exhibits, lively pig races, and performances and workshops by the Silver Starlets circus troupe.10

The San Mateo County Fair’s comprehensive programming, which explicitly incorporates “Asian Cultural Day,” and “Pacific Islands Day,” along with a varied musical roster, demonstrates a deliberate and extensive commitment to representing the county’s diverse cultural composition.1 This approach signifies that significant public events within San Mateo County are increasingly designed to be inclusive and reflective of its multicultural demographics, actively fostering cultural understanding and celebration. The Fair thus functions as a central gathering point that caters to a broad spectrum of interests beyond conventional fair attractions, serving as a microcosm of the county’s vibrant diversity.

Juneteenth Observances (Throughout June)

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the historical moment when slavery officially ended in the United States, serving as a pivotal day to celebrate freedom and equal rights.11 The increasing public observance of Juneteenth across San Mateo County reflects its growing prominence as a recognized and celebrated holiday.

San Mateo County Libraries will host a special drumming experience with Onye Onyemaechi in celebration of Juneteenth.11 This particular event is highlighted by the East Palo Alto Library.11 An “African Village Experience With Onye Onyemaechi” is also scheduled for June 9, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM, at the East Palo Alto Library.12

In Redwood City, the San Mateo County Juneteenth Flag Raising ceremony is planned for Wednesday, June 11, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM, at the San Mateo County Courtyard, located at 455 County Center.13 Furthermore, the City of San Mateo’s facilities will be closed on Thursday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.14 Similarly, Daly City will observe a City Holiday Closure on Thursday, June 19, for Juneteenth.15 The widespread recognition of Juneteenth, evidenced by these city facility closures, flag-raising ceremonies, and dedicated cultural events at libraries, signifies a societal shift towards greater recognition of historical events related to civil rights and a deepening commitment to cultural education and remembrance within the community. This means that residents can anticipate both opportunities for engaging in cultural events and potential adjustments to public services due to holiday closures.
